Cheesy Whole Masoor Dal Soup (Red Lentils Soup with Cheese)


           A healthy and a nutritious soup of whole masoor dal (red lentil) with cheese for some extra flavour. It can be had as it is or with some croutons / bread sticks for a wholesome meal. I wanted to deviate from the normal soup, so added a little bit of sambar powder and curry leaves. The taste was simply delicious.

  • 1/2 cup whole masoor dal, soaked for an hour
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic, chopped
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 tsp. cheese
  • 1 tbsp. olive oil / butter
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp. sambar powder
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper powder
  • 1 tbsp. lime juice

          Heat oil and saute the onion, garlic and curry leaves till translucent. Add the turmeric powder, salt, pepper powder and sambar powder and turn off the flame. Saute for a few seconds.

          Add the dal and 2 cups water and pressure cook for 4-5 whistles.When cool, add the cheese and blend into a puree. Heat through and serve with a dash of lime juice.
