Vegetable Upma (Vegetable - Semolina Porridge - South Indian Style)

This is a traditional South Indian breakfast of semolina cooked with veggies. It is very healthy and nutritious. At the same time it is very wholesome too. A sprinkle of nalla karam podi or any idli podi enhances the taste and flavour. It can be had on its own or with some coconut chutney.

  • 1/2 cup sooji (semolina)
  • 1 cup mixed veggies, chopped
  • 2 tbsp. oil
  • 1/2 tsp. mustard seeds
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tsp. ginger, grated
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 green chilies, chopped or slit
  • 1 tsp. urad dal (split black gram)
  • 1 tbsp. chana dal (Bengal gram)
  • 2 tbsp. peanuts, roasted
  • salt to taste
  • coriander leaves & nalla karam podi / idli podi

Heat oil in a pan and temper with mustard seeds. After it stops spluttering, add the urad dal, chana dal and curry leaves. Then add the onion, ginger and green chilies. Saute till light brown.

Add the chopped veggies and saute for a minute. Now add the sooji and fry till light brown in colour. Add salt, 2 cups water and the roasted peanuts.

Simmer on low flame till it becomes thick. Switch off the flame. Transfer to a serving dish. Serve, garnished with coriander leaves and a sprinkle of some podi (gunpowder).
