Masala Oats Paniyaram (South Indian Breakfast / Snack - Fusion Style)



          Kuzhi Paniyaram is a traditional South Indian breakfast, most popular in Tamil Nadu. In simple words they are fried idli or dumplings made from leftover idli / dosa batter. They are prepared in a special mould called chatti. 

          But let me share paniyaram made out of oats that are very crispy and yummy. Healthy and nutritious, they can also be relished as a tea-time snack or as an appetizer with coconut chutney. So check out the step by step pictorial recipe to prepare it.






          There is absolutely nothing fancy about this simple breakfast. I just added some roasted gram flour along with the usual onion-ginger-garlic-green chilies-coconut and few dry spice powder and voila! you have a quick and comforting breakfast ready in a jiffy. Hubby was super excited as oats being his favorite and I sometimes pack as a lunch box meal for him. 





  • 1 cup oats, dry roasted
  • 1/2 cup roasted gram flour
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp. ginger-garlic grated
  • 2-3 tbsp. fresh grated coconut
  • 1-2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • pinch of baking soda
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp. red chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper powder
  • 1 tsp. sambar powder
  • 1 tsp. flaxseed (opt)
  • handful of coriander leaves & stems, chopped
  • oil to fry 








          Mix together all the above mentioned ingredients (except oil) into a batter with required quantity of buttermilk. Keep aside for 15-20 minutes. Add water if needed.

          Heat a paniyaram chatti and grease well. Drop spoonful of the prepared batter in it and cook, covered on a low flame till one side is well browned.

          Flip it over and cook the other side too till done. Switch off the flame and drain on a kitchen towel. 

         Serve them hot along with coconut chutney or any of your favorite chutney.




                         Mix all ingredients (except oil) into a batter with some buttermilk.
                         Keep aside for 15-20 minutes. Add water if needed.



                   Heat a paniyaram chatti & grease well. Drop spoonful of the prepared 
                   batter in it & cook, covered, on a low flame till one side is well browned.



                                  Flip it over & cook other side too till done. 



                                  Switch off the flame & drain on a kitchen towel. 






                       Serve them hot with coconut chutney or any of your favorite chutney.
