Nolen Gurer Ice Cream (Date Palm Jaggery Ice Cream)

Try this absolutely easy ice cream at home using date palm jaggery. As the latter is a natural sweetener, I have not used any sugar. But you may if required. Just blend all the ingredients and freeze till set. It is that simple.

Making ice cream is a breeze. It cannot be much simpler than this. Now you know what to serve your guests for an-after meal dessert. I bet there will be much appreciation coming your way. So get going and start preparing this authentic Bengali style Ice Cream and enjoy this chilled homemade delight with your loved ones.

This particular recipe was in my mind since a very long time as the small block of this deliciously aromatic jaggery, sitting in the refrigerator, was reminding me time and again that I should make an attempt now. Date Palm jaggery is a seasonal delicacy found in kolkata and in West Bengal in particular.

There are various types of traditional sweets made out of it. So we make it a point to procure it from any friend / relative coming from Kolkata. Anyway back to the recipe.... This was my first attempt at making this Bengali style Ice Cream and it turned out very delicious. I made use of only evaporated milk, jaggery and milk powder. In the absence of the former, you can as well use half of milk and cream.

  • 1 & 1/2 cups evaporated milk (reduced thick milk)
  • 1/2 cup melted jaggery or to taste
  • 1/2 cup milk powder
  • 1/4 tsp. cardamom powder
  • 1 tsp. rose water / kewra water
  • chopped nuts to garnish
  • grated jaggery to garnish

Blend together all the above mentioned ingredients (except chopped nuts & grated jaggery).

Transfer to an airtight container and freeze for 2 hours. Then stir with a spoon and again freeze for another two hours.

Keep stirring 2-3 times. Finally freeze overnight or for a minimum of 8 hours. Serve in individual bowls and enjoy this delectable ice cream chilled.

Note....
1. In the absence of date palm jaggery, you can try with normal jaggery too. But the aromatic flavour of this particular jaggery may be missing.
