Pepe Sheddo (Mashed Green Papaya Curry - Bengali Style)

This is a very simple no-fuss recipe which is enjoyed with only plain steamed rice. It is a great comfort food for me when time is a constraint. This quick and simple side dish is so satisfying and heavenly.

Having it with just some ghee or mustard oil is simply yummy. It can be also termed as papaya bharta in simple terms. Boiled potato too can be cooked in the similar manner to be relished with either rice or chapati.

  • 1 small raw / green papaya, roughly chopped
  • 1-2 tbsp. mustard oil
  • 2 whole dry chilies, broken into half
  • 1 tsp. nigella seeds (kalonji)
  • salt to taste
  • 1-2 tbsp. coriander leaves

Pressure cook the papaya for 3-4 whistles. Mash or grate it and keep aside. Heat oil in a pan and temper with nigella seeds and red chilies. Saute for a few seconds.

Add the onion and salt. Fry till light brown. Add it to the boiled papaya. Add coriander leaves and mix well. Serve with plain steamed rice.
