Ragi Flour Cheela (Finger Millet Pancakes)

Ragi (finger millet) flour in general is very healthy compared to all other flours. It contains calcium, iron and is very high on fibre content. It is low in carb, is gluten free and is very good for diabetics. Hence this flour can be used to make many delicious recipes.

Today I gave a twist to the original besan cheela and prepared ragi cheela / pancakes out of it. To make it more nutritious, you can also add any finely chopped veggies of your choice. So check out the step by step pictorial recipe to prepare it.

  • 3/4 cup ragi flour
  • 1/4 cup rice flour
  • 2 tbsp. fresh grated coconut
  • salt to taste
  • 1/4 tsp. asafoetida
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tsp. ginger, grated
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • handful of coriander leaves, chopped
  • buttermilk as required
  • oil to shallow fry

In a bowl combine all the above mentioned ingredients (except oil) and prepare a batter of pouring consistency.

Heat 1 tsp. of oil in a tawa and spread a ladleful of the batter and gently spread it in a circle with the back of your ladle.

Cook on  a medium flame till one side is done before flipping it over to cook the other side. Drizzle some more oil and when done, transfer to a serving plate.

Make similar cheelas with the remaining batter. Serve with any chutney or pickle of your choice.
